Protect Your Photos with a Watermark

By Lumeng Lim www.meng.cidhosting.net

Most of the scrappers nowadays are not only interested in showcasing their layouts but their pictures as well. Many have ventured into photography and even taking formal photography lessons. One of the ways for people to easily identify your photos is by putting a watermark on it. Just follow the easy steps below:

Using Adobe Photoshop

1. Open the photo file you want to put a watermark on.

2. Add a new transparent layer

3. Place the text you want to put. In this example, I placed “meng.lim photography”. Select the layer. Right click, then select Blending options. Choose Bevel and Emboss and follow the settings below.

4. On the Layer Palette, change the blending mode to soft light.

5. On the Layer Menu, choose Merge Visible or click Ctrl-Shift-E. From the File menu, choose Save as JPEG and save your photo.

Doing it in batch using Adobe Photoshop

With the help of actions, you can watermark a batch of photos in just a few clicks.

  1. Open one of the photos you want to put a watermark on.
  2. Click Alt-F9 to enable the Actions toolbox.
  3. Create a new action. Assign an appropriate name. You can also add a shortcut key.
  4. Repeat steps 2-5 above.
  5. Click on stop.

Actions are similar to recorders wherein it saves whatever commands you did.

Now for watermarking a batch of photos.

  1. In Windows Explorer, put all the photos you want to put a watermark in a folder. Create another folder for the resulting images with watermark.
  2. On the File menu, choose Automate, then Batch.
  3. Input the source (where all your photos are) and destination (where you want your photos to be saved).
  4. Set the Action to the action you want the batch to repeatedly do. In our case, our action name is Watermark.
  5. Click OK and wait until Photoshop finishes applying the watermark on all your photos.

Here are the result photos.

Other Batch Watermarking software

I found a freeware that allows you to put watermakrs on a batch of photos. It’s called Watermark V2 (http://www.photo-freeware.net/watermark-v2.php).

All you need is to define a source image as watermark and place it where ever you want on the specific original photo. The transparency of the whole watermark or even a single colour can easily be set up to the needs by a control panel working in percent.

All these settings can be added as a batch operation to a complete picture folder. waterMark V2 supports Bitmap, GIF, JPEG, PNG und TIFF image formats.

Tips on watermarking photos

Aside from identification, one of the main purpose why we put watermarks is because we don’t want our photos to get stolen. Avoid putting watermarks on plain or simple background. These are very easy to remove by using the Eraser tool of Photoshop.

While it may take advanced Photoshop users just a few actions to remove the watermark, at least make their job a bit harder. Here are some tips on putting watermarks:

  1. Put your watermark on a busy background. It would take a lot of time to remove this.

  2. Make the watermark hard to duplicate. Use unique fonts or add images.

  3. Use at least 50% opacity
